Places I've Shot
by Jason C. Strickland

I have made this table to give some info about the courses I've shot
When I travel I always use  www.ClayTargetsOnline.com  to find a course to shoot
Join me on my quest to find the "Shangri La" course of Sporting Clays
I have included a "subjective" rating system for clubs that exemplify what I think a clays course should be like. Score include 10 factors:
Man made features, natural terrain features, trap machine function, groundskeeping, target presentations, management attitude,
public availability, cost per round, course safety & clubhouse smile factor. A score of 1/10 is poor & 10/10 is perfect
I will add 0.5 extra bonus point to the Ranking Score if the club is capable of hosting the NSCA -- US OPEN

Texas Courses

Allcorn Creek
Bryan, TX
A local Skeet, Trap, 5-Stand & Sporting Clays range where I first learned how to shoot clay targets with instructor Jeff Bolich. Allcorn is no longer in business.

N32 36.623 W97 14.562

This is a very large & long course similar to Elm Fork's wood course laid out in scrubby oak trees. The cart paths are the widest I have ever seen and very well maintained. The machines worked well with a good mix of target setting types. A few tower shots and some shots over ponds. One of the very few that is a pay first then shoot facility. Trailer parking is dicey & don't park by the rifle range it's loud. www.alpinerange.com

American Shooting Center
Houston, TX
281-556-8199 open We -> Su
N29 44.124  W95 39.241
A very large scale commercial operation that includes rifle, pistol and all Sporting Clays disciplines. Located in Houston its very busy place on weekends & the shear volume of shooters they have can prevent you from having a casual round of clays. NSCA events here are OK with an exceptional amount of target setting resources but the course terrain is dull and flat & subject to high winds & standing water. Numerous coporate & fundraisers events. Tons of towers. The property is so big that a clays car is needed for NSCA events and signage telling you where to go is unhelpful. I have always been very critical of this course but I am willing to allow for updates as new mgmt takes over. NSCA event staff are polite but lack the warm feel that smaller "Mom & Pop" clubs offer. Daily staff are care free. Large clubhouse open for NSCA events. Can host US Open http://www.amshootcenters.com Rating Score = 4.5/10 (2008)

Dull terrain with short chubby tree cover. Large 12 station walkable course, a 5 station pre-lim, a 5 station corporate & two 5-stands. Some ponds but not used for presentations. Just outside Austin. Small clubhouse. Some elevated platforms and several targets thrown below your feet. Trap positions were safety concern. Cart paths are muddy when it rains. Minimal parking for major NSCA events. http://www.capitolclays.com Rating Score = 5.5/10 (2008)

Cedar Ridge
Bulverde, TX
830-980-4424
N29 43.705 W98 20.107
One of the very first sporting clays courses in the country this club had it's hey-day back in the 90's. It's out of place with todays modern clubs that offer two 15 station course & clays car paths etc. A little Mom&Pop club like this is a refreshing divergence for those who don't want all the whisltles & bells or a full day of monster clays Just a short drive onorth of San Antonio. Its a 5 station walkable course in dense mesquite with a 5-stand. Nothing fancy just sporting at it's most basic. http://www.cedarridgerange.com Rating Score = 4/10 (2008)

Chicken Ranch

CREEKWOOD
Creekwood
Conroe, TX
N30 20.695  W95 33.202
Just off 105 on the West side of Conroe this little place has a great 5-stand, no clays course. The 8 machine 5-stand is well worth the visit. Next time your on way through stop in and have a go. No clays car needed. 936-828-7622
Dallas Gun Club
Dallas, TX
N3259.750 W96 57.315
members only
Poor course management & inability to deal with known flooding issues. The two courses are long way from clubhouse. No signs off the I-35 frontage indicating club entrance. Clubhouse is setup for the "old school" skeet & trap members. Country club elitist attitude that I didn't care for. They have a large covered pavilion perfect for BBQ lunch on the course but when I was there for a 200+ NSCA event - I had to buy a sandwhich at the clubhouse which was covered in ants. I would rather shoot at ASC at least it's closer to where I live. Rating Score = 4/10 (2008)

Elm Fork
Dallas, TX
972-556-0103 open 7days/wk
N32 52.495  W96 55.187

Two courses, one out in the open the other in the woods. Great place but subject to flooding. Owned and operated by top gun Scott Robertson, it has some interesting presentations, like a target hitting a trampoline & changing flight path. Very cool but you might need a cart. Can host US Open http://www.elmfork.com

Garwood Sporting Clays
Garwood, TX

Very friendly family run business located just south of Sealy off I-10. Horseshoe course can be walked. Lots of incoming targets over water simulating ducks. Staff work very hard at shooter satisfaction. One of my most favorite places to shoot.

Greater Houston Gun Club

Gunsmoke

The Brazos Valley's only fully automatic Sporting course. 12 stations in a long straight line so I recommend a clays car. 5-stand also. Host to numerous local fundraisers and operated by great guys who are NSCA shooters and know what shooters want. Open throughout the week, great place to practise your craft.

Hill Country
Shooting Sports
Kerrville, TX
N30 03.297  W99 03.849
An Olympic shooting sport training facility. HC's NSCA main course is a unique course set in a abandoned limestone quarry with a mix of mesquite trees. The puplic course is set in an area where the bright light off the white rocks can play havoc with target acquisition. You need a cart for the rough terrain &. Very dusty cart paths make a mess of things. http://www.shootingandhunting.net

One In A Hundred
Lumberton, TX

Deep SE Texas corner in the pine trees. Carefree staff couldn't have cared less if I was there or not. Walkable course, machines were dodgey at times and ran out of targets. Shooter safety was a concern on some stations. Cool targets over water. I shot a NSCA event here in '08 which was very poorly run.

N30 09.662  W94 46.724
Great targets presented over lots of water ponds, dense woods & open fields. Beautiful terrain and course features but a very long course -difficult to walk. Some border on safety issues as you tend to be shooting towards other stations often. I highly recommend shooting here. The single 12 station course takes up the entire property so a major NSCA event like TX state or US Open would be very difficult. http://www.pecanmeadow.com/index2.htm

Great course in NE Texas piney woods. Very friendly staff. This facility played co-host with Dallas Gun Club to the 2007 World All Around Championship. The live box birds and sporting clays events were held here. The course features an old flat bed truck that you shoot bunnies from.

Not open to public except during NSCA shoots. An amazingly beautiful course laid out in old golf course. Targets fly over sand bunkers and water hazards. The large size of the groundse enables Rio to have multiple courses. One station has an old red phone booth to shoot from. A must shoot venue. The closest thing we have in TX to a perfect facility. Spacious new covered building for eating & gathering. Humid in summer. Clay car suggested. http://www.shootpromotions.com/rio_brazos.htm

Established in 2007, these friendly folks have a great casual atmosphere that is refreshing in what can be an overly commercial sport/game. Flat terrain with scrub brush and short trees the range offers up a no frills, laid back atmosphere. No water ponds or tall towers but the 10 station course does offer a few specialty targets & a 5-stand. NSCA events hopefull in 2009. Some minor safety concerns will need addressing before NSCA shoots begin. Clays Car handy, as course is long L shape & you double back after #10. Located near an Interstate and far enough south out of DFW but not to far.

This large guest ranch located at the NE edge of the TX Hill Country has an exceptionaly nice sporting course. They have a 5 station pre-lim & 10 station main. The main has water ponds, pre-lim has a deep ravine, targets off of high limestone cliffs (instead of towers), good mix of specialty targets. The covered limestone shooting stations are very nice, however you can dent your O/U on the rock if your not careful. Very friendly staff, good signage to course once on property, well maintained grounds, walkable main but clays cars are always a good idea in the hill country terrain. Good parking, covered gathering areas. Reservations req for public so call ahead. NSCA shoots are top notch with chef prepared meals. http://www.roughcreek.com

Rose City Clays
Tyler, TX
903-597-3345
N 32 24.253  W95 18.925

Fairly new club, similar terrain as "Prairie Creek" up the road in Gladewater. Course is in hilly terrain with a mix of pine trees and scrubby undergrowth. The rough sandy cart path is subject to wash out and I highly recommend a sturdy Clays Car. Very friendly staff. Machines in good working order and decent target presentations. No water ponds or tower shots. Nothing unique that sets this course apart from others, however, future looks promising. http://www.tylergunclub.com Rating Score = 5.75/10 (2008)

Tonkaway Ranch
College Station, TX
979-776-1476 appt only

Home base of operations for BVSCA. 10 stations in the woods. My very first brush with sporting clays and shotguns for that matter) was here at the 2003 "Crimestoppers" shoot. That experience got me additicted to the game and wanting to learning how to shoot. Trapper & reservations required as machines are manual. Two towers & a small ravine.

Twin Creeks Ranch
Franklin, TX
A great facility once owned by local clays legend & realtor Erik Scott, Twin Creeks used to host a number of charity/fundraiser events but unfortunately was forced to close it's doors back in 2005.  I liked the overhead tower shots.

WB Ranch
Whitney, TX

Beautiful hunting lodge and retreat. Course is laid out in heavy woods. Clays car is a must. Friendly staff at the lodge but they couldn't have cared if we were there shooting. Machines are usually out of targets or with dead batteries. Poor course maintenance. Lots of exotic game animals roaming the course. http://www.wbranch.com - I have not shot a NSCA event here.

Wow this place has some beautiful scenery. Two 15 station courses, 1 open with vistas of deep valleys & mountiains in the background the other course in trees with deep ravines. Very friendly staff, great clubhouse. Long courses but walkable. Clays cars won't work well & aren't allowed due to fear you might drive off a cliff to the canyon below. So bring a push cart or rent one of theirs. No website. Hosted one of the first US Open's but couldn't again due to cart issue. Rating Score = 8.75/10 (2008)

30 miles east of Denver. The entire course is in a dry creek bed and you shoot at targets thrown from the banks. One station you shoot from an old flat bed truck. Very, very unique course. One of a kind place with an awesome lodge. Overall target presantation is dull due to the course design.

Perhaps the most unique course I have ever shot. Literally way up high on the side of a mountain. One station your shooting from a 300 ft cliff that requires a descent down a set of wooden stairs to the bottom. Breathtaking views. No clays cars - They don't work well on stairs. Stoney Creek is nestled in the rolling green hills of Laurel Highlands in Southwest PA. 17 stations, wide gravel cart paths, carts to rent, wooded stations mixed with open fields. A pond for those who like birds over water & a good mix of various target presentations. No towers but they have a huge barn that throws a high bird over the pond. The Shooting Academy At Nemacolin Resort, PA
N39 47.830 W79 32.653
Heralded as the "Augusta" of the sporting clays world it is perhaps the closest thing to PGA sporting clays we have. Now the entrance and grounds around the course make you think your going to play golf but the 2 courses they have are in the woods like any other course you might find. The sheer volume of shooters requires a "Tee" time and a mandatory trapper who drives you around in a clays car & gives advice when needed. Trappers look the part too, in shooting vest and full regalia, these are seasoned veterans not your typical high school kid who can't get off a cell phone. They have Berreta O/U shotguns & everything else to rent if you don't have your gear. Expect to spend several hundred here easy. A bird hunting facility with a 30 station manual hand thrown course as a side business. Hilly terrain in southwest PA. Lots of wooded and open stations. TNT is not a high volume club and not prepared for walk-up shooters, call before going. Safety is a bit dodgy and presentations are repetitve and boring.
